Green Light Laser Prostatectomy
Green light laser prostatectomy (GLL) is a revolutionary new way to treat men suffering from urinary symptoms due to benign enlargement of the prostate.
GLL offers a minimally invasive approach for the treatment of an enlarged prostate. The central portion of the prostate (transitional zone) is vapourised using a powerful laser. This allows the urine to pass through the prostate more easily and improves the urinary flow. A better flow will allow the bladder to store more urine and so reduce urinary frequency in the day and at night.
The fiber is introduced via a telescope down the penis under a general or a spinal anaesthetic and a catheter to drain the bladder is often required post-operatively for a short period. This method causes little blood loss allowing the possibility of a day case procedure and unlike the more traditional methods of treatment does not cause any problems with erections.
We were the first group in the north west to use the green light laser and have the greatest experience with this new technology.
